Funded by Culture Moves Europe, Laura Sonne (DK), Fiona Byrne (IRE) & Louise Lang (DE) traveled to Snæfellsbær in West Iceland in March 2025. There they meet the local Cultural Development team, artists, curators and experienced the raw Icelandic landscape.

As three makers working through glass the elemental nature of Icelandic terrain has an undeniable allure. The intersections of our practices brought us together and we will use this time to develop artistically while planning and creating new connections towards a future event in Hellisandur.

Louise - “As an embodied process, I shape the material, an invisible director, developing my conceptual understanding and intuitive experiences with material. Starting with the experiential process of making, I focus on a particular notion of glass making and allow the experience to develop into something else. I seek alternative frameworks to document and articulate this conversation I have with process, including photography, video, installation, screen printing.”

Laura - “I am curious about how the human body relates to its surroundings, both in the natural and artificial world. I work with the connection between glass and words. I find inspiration in literary texts and theories, poetry and songs, nature and myths. I believe that objects can be a sort of sign for the viewer to read and engage in a dialogue with, much like words.”

Fiona - “I am focused on how a greater connection with body, material and place can reshape how we interact with the world, exploring the transformative potential of material engagement. My own connection with material and tactic skills is hugely important, imbuing the work with a residue or memory of the knowledge that led to its creation.”
